Most of the parents presume that children are automatically active and so they don't think that it is necessary for the children to follow a special fitness regime. However, this concept is not true in all cases and parents should take care of their children's health and fitness from the very basic level. Proper development of muscles and bones are very necessary for a child to live a normal and healthy life.

One of the ideal form of exercise for children is Yoga, if one can do it religiously on a regular basis then it acts as a great tool to develop the mind and to improve the overall health. There are different poses of Yoga which helps to tone the muscles and makes the body more flexible. Yoga is beneficial for the different organs in the body, for instance, this form of exercise improves the functioning of the respiratory organs, improves the blood circulation in the body, improves the digestive system and so on.

The most advantageous thing about Yoga is that it helps children to focus on studies and to develop a cool and calm mind. Nowadays Yoga is taught in many schools as a part of their extracurricular activities. Some of the popular Yoga poses or asanas for children are as follows:

Vrksasana or Tree Pose - This pose improves the balance and strength of a child.

Matsyasana or Fish Pose - This pose improves and strengthens the muscles of the neck region and that of the upper back.

Dhanurasana or Bow Pose - This pose strengthens the back and improves elasticity of the body.

Butterfly - This is quite an easy pose and helps children to stretch their spine and legs.

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation - It consists of twelve continuous steps. The Surya Namaskar is very beneficial for children as it improves their digestion and the power of concentration. It also improves the functioning of different organs like the lungs, heart etc.
Parents can make their children practice yoga from the very tender age of 5 years. For a small child a 20 minute session would be enough. As a child grows the span of time for doing the exercises can be gradually increased.
